How to invest money without trying

I have the brain of a 5 year old when it comes to managing/investing/understanding money. This is terribly embarrassing to admit, since I’m 46, raising 2 kids, and trying to make a go of a creative business, but my mind is 97% creative swirliness, and when it comes to anything regarding numbers or history or politics (yawn), I shut down swiftly and completely.

The problem here is that I don’t wish to die penniless, toothless, friendless, and witless, and I hate having to rely so completely on Christian to handle all the finances of our family. I will reluctantly admit that I have fallen into the traditional housewife role of child-rearing, cooking (um, cereal counts as cooking), “cleaning”, and dabbling in creative endeavors.

It’s easy to do. It’s easy to slip into that role, and I feel like I’ve lost my edge and my sense of urgency.

All this to say I have a little financial secret. It’s something I started on a whim, and never think about until I log into my account on occasion to see how much money I’ve got squirreled away.

It’s called Acorns, and I have no idea how I heard about it, but about 2 years ago I downloaded the app and let them round up all my purchases to the next dollar, grab all that money and invest it in exciting things like stocks!

Here’s a video if you want to watch more. If you get bored, there are pretty drawings and colorful dots to look at while the nice fellow is talking:

This is perfect for people who don’t have a lot of money but want to feel like they are doing something – anything to invest a little money. And it’s for people who don’t understand investing, and it’s for people who don’t want to be bothered with figuring it all out, or don’t have the brain capacity to do so.

Anyway, here I am owning up to my ignorance, assuming some of you out there might be in the same camp.

For the record, I’m also looking into hiring someone to teach me Wave (online accounting site), because I’ve finally realized I should probably maybe sorta know the basics of where my money is coming and going if I am serious about being a business owner.

I think I’ll always keep my little Acorns thingy on the side, though, because it feels like a secret game I have going on that’s just making me money when I sleep. If you want to do this for yourself, here’s an invite, and we will each get a $5 bonus added to our investments. WHEEEOOOOO!

This is definitely on my financial to-do list for this year! Or rather, I will be implementing it on my husband in hopes that it will help him invest in things besides the broken down motorcycles and weird car parts he is always finding “for a deal”, haha. And I don’t even have to worry about him arguing because he will nod off before I finish explaining it! 😀

Ha! Well, I’m glad you’re trying it- it’s sort of fun to check in every once in a while to see what your secret money has done. Definitely more fun than old car parts…. but maybe that’s just me. 🙂
