Meditation does not come easily to me. My mind is pretty much going 24-7, which is probably both a result of and a cause of having anxiety.
Of course, we all have a bunch of thoughts flying around our brains at any given moment, and it’s absolutely beneficial for us to quiet our minds sometimes and get a little break from thinkiness.
I use the Insight Timer app to meditate, mostly because I can’t just sit and close my eyes and meditate on my own.
I need a guided meditation or music set for a certain amount of time or I turn into a wiggly 4 year old. There’s something about that app that keeps me behaving during meditation time.
I also find I go in waves, where sometimes I need to drown out my brain voices with someone else’s voice, and sometimes I get sick of everybody else’s voice and need no words coming in.
If you haven’t tried Insight Timer yet, or are just looking for some new meditation recommendations, here are my recent favorites on the app. (It’s a free app with a paid membership option if you want to take courses.)
Awesome Insight Timer Meditations
Kenneth Soares – I AM Morning Affirmations: Happiness, Confidence, Freedom, Love, Passion, and Purpose
A 15 minute meditation set to the wonderful beat of drums. I can’t help but sort of bop to the beat while I’m listening. I try to take his words- basically a series of affirmations- straight into my heart. Or my soul. The center of my body. Somewhere dark and nebulous.
At one point he says the phrase, “where focus goes, energy flows”, and then he follows up with an offhand “good to know” which makes me laugh every time.
The affirmations combined with the drums and his style of delivering them feel powerful and make them easy to believe; to feel. It feels better to me to absorb affirmations like this instead of in a sweet, quiet way. This is empowering. I feel like a badass after listening to this, like I could just fling open my front door, strut on down the street and everything would fall into place perfectly all day long.
Sarah Blondin – Discovering Your Intrinsic Self
Her voice is so soothing – not too high or low, no weird quirks or strange pronunciations of words. Her emotion comes through the recording and makes you FEEL. Her words are poetry – straight from the heart- beautiful and not sappy.
Sarah’s meditations start with her speaking and usually at the end she asks you to close your eyes and her voice shifts to meditative, but I close my eyes for the whole thing and try to absorb everything she’s saying.
I love every one of hers that I’ve listened to, but I chose this one since it was the first one of hers I listened to. Hers was the first course I took when I upgraded.

StressFit – Trust Your Heart
I have a few of their meditations bookmarked; they’re amazing and powerful guided meditations. It took me a little bit to get used to the sound and tempo of one of their voices. It annoyed me at first, and then I felt really soothed by it.
Stressfit put out so many meditations onto the app, and I love that they cover a bunch of topics. They are my current go-to-first.
Melissa Ambrosini – Manifestation Meditation
Law of Attraction goodness! Melissa has a lovely Australian accent and this meditation is just a 9 minute break in your day to remind you to focus on what you’re trying to attract into your life.
I love meditation teachers who have calm but everyday voices, who sometimes take a moment to remind you that you aren’t doing your meditation wrong no matter what, and who don’t feel like they’re trying to sound like an ethereal angel from another dimension.
Let me know what you think if you try this- I’m always trying to get people to meditate if you haven’t started a practice yet, and it’s so nice to have a free option to help you get used to making meditation a habit.
